Explanations of Ranking Criteria
|
Scorecard can rank facilities or geographic areas using the raw data companies
report to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI),
or using Scorecard's information about the
health hazards of reported releases. Each ranking criteria is defined briefly below,
with hotlinks to more information if you need it.
Total environmental releases
The sum of chemicals covered by TRI that industrial facilities
release to the environment
(air, surface water, underground injection and land).
Air releases
Chemicals covered by TRI that industrial facilities
release to air according to reports to TRI.
Water releases
Chemicals covered by TRI that industrial facilities
release to surface water
according to reports to TRI.
Land releases
Chemicals covered by TRI that industrial facilities
release to land according to reports to TRI.
Underground injection
Chemicals covered by TRI that industrial facilities
inject underground according to reports to TRI.
Total off-site transfers
Chemicals covered by TRI that industrial facilities
transfer off-site to other
facilities for disposal, recycling, combustion for energy recovery, or treatment.
Total production-related waste
The sum of all chemical waste
generated at a facility, prior to any form of on-site or off-site waste management.
Ozone depleting potential
Reported releases to air of TRI chemicals, weighted by their
ozone depleting potential.
Cancer risk score
Reported releases to air and water of
TRI carcinogens,
weighted by a risk score that accounts for differences
in toxicity and exposure potential (pounds of benzene-equivalents).
Noncancer risk score
Reported releases to air and water of TRI chemicals with noncancer health effects, weighted by a
risk score that accounts for differences in toxicity and
exposure potential (pounds of (pounds of toluene-equivalents).
Recognized carcinogens to air

cancer
and that are released
to air according to company reports to TRI.
Recognized carcinogens to water
Chemicals that are recognized to cause
cancer
and that are released
to water according to company reports to TRI.
