POLLUTION LOCATOR|Scorecard's Sources of Animal Waste Data

LIVESTOCK POPULATION
Livestock population data comes from two sources:

U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service. 1997 Census of Agriculture. This USDA-NASS database provides population data on various animal types for all states with registered livestock operations through 1997. Scorecard utilizes this database to calculate annual waste levels from 1987 to 1997.

North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources. North Carolina farm location and animal population dataset (An_Cov.tab) can be obtained from ftp://h2o.enr.state.nc.us/pub/Non-Discharge/. This NCDENR dataset is the source for all of Scorecard's information on hog farm operations in North Carolina.

ANIMAL WASTE CALCULATION
Animal waste calculations are based on two sources:

North Carolina State University, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. 1997 North Carolina Agricultural Chemicals Manual.

Battye, R., Battye, W., Overcash, C., and Fudge, S. Development and Selection of Ammonia Emission Factors. Office or Research and Development, U.S. EPA, Washington D.C. 1994.
