Maximum Contaminant Levels (Safe Drinking Water Act)

Description
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was enacted to protect
the quality of drinking water in the United States. SWDA
requires the U.S. EPA to establish primary drinking-water
regulations for contaminants in public water systems that
may have adverse effects on people's health. Such
regulations typically include a media quality standard that
defines legally allowable concentrations of toxic
chemicals, called maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). MCLs
are established to be as close to a level that is without
known or anticipated adverse health effects as is
technically or economically feasible.
All contaminants that may have any adverse health effects
and may occur in public water systems are covered by SDWA,
but both Congress and the U.S. EPA have found it necessary
to establish priorities for developing drinking-water regulations, given
the large number of potential contaminants. Following
amendments to SWDA passed in 1997, MCLs are established
for prioritized candidates on a fixed time schedule.
