Hazardous Substances (Superfund)
|
|
Description
The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and
Liability Act (CERCLA) created the Superfund Program to
clean up uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous-waste sites and
to respond to accidents, spills, and other emergency
releases of pollutants and contaminants. Section 101
defines a list of hazardous chemicals for which the U.S.
EPA must establish regulations. Releases of CERCLA
hazardous substances in amounts greater than their
"reportable quantity" must be reported to the National
Response Center and to state and local government officials.
Hazardous substances identified in CERCLA include all
chemicals on the following regulatory lists:
1. Clean Air Act list of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs)
2. Clean Water Act list of hazardous substances and priority
pollutants
3. Solid Waste Disposal Act list of hazardous wastes
4. Toxic Substances Control Act list of imminent hazards
