POLYCHLORINATED DIBENZO-P-DIOXINS
Health Hazards

The Second National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals lists a number of chemicals in this class. They are linked together because they may share one mechanism by which they cause adverse health effects, and because they have some similarities in chemical structure, but their industrial uses are different. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and Polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDFs) are unintentional byproducts of a variety of industrial processes and of incineration of materials containing chlorine, such as PVC plastic. Coplanar Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) were manufactured for use primarily as insulating liquid in electrical equipment, such as transformers. Scorecard provides information on industrial releases of dioxins in general, of which PCDDs are a part. This information can be found by clicking on the link above. In addition, Scorecard provides information on the health hazards of several specific chemicals and categories of chemicals, which can be found by clicking on the appropriate chemical names. CDC's biomonitoring results for dioxin and furan compounds are available at http://www.cdc.gov/exposurereport/dioxinfuran/default.htm
